WEST ELSDON- The victim of the attempted carjacking, Stephanie Lysy, 16, said an armed male approached the driver’s side of her car in attempts to steal it.
Lysy said the gunman walked toward her car from a small black sedan idling behind her at a red light. The man revealed a small, black handgun and pointed the weapon at her.
Lysy said the armed man demanded, “Get out of the car. I’ll shoot, get out of the car!”
After no response, the man repeated the threat. Lysy, a newly licensed driver, ran through the red light to get away while the man was distracted from the situation. No one was harmed at the scene.
The Chicago Police Department has reported 466 cases of Vehicle Thefts so far in 2019 within District 08.
In January of 2019, the Chicago Police Department announced the launch of police vehicles with ‘license plate reader’ technology, to potentially reduce the number of carjackings in Chicago and to identify stolen vehicles. By activating this campaign, officials believe they can find stolen cars and act quickly on reporting them.
Lysy said her windows were rolled down and loud music was playing from the vehicle. “I should have been more aware and alert.” She did not report the incident to the authorities because no one was harmed at the scene. The victim was driving a silver 2004, Mazda Tribute.
Chicago Police Officials advise citizens, “In your car: secure your ride. Lock your doors and be sure to store your purse, wallet or other valuables beneath your seat”.
